Colfer, E. (2009). Artemis Fowl. New York, NY: Disney/Hyperion Books.
This is the first book in the popular eight book Artemis Fowl series. This series is popular in the U.S., the U.K. and Ireland. Eoin Colfer is an Irish author and he and the series have won several Irish book awards. I think it would be really interesting to make a display of books that are popular globally for the tween section of the library to show tweens where else their favorite books are popular.
This first book introduces readers to Artemis a twelve year old genius and millionaire who is also a criminal mastermind in his free time. Artemis is also determined to capture a fairy which is how he meets Captain Holly short and changes his life forever. He and the fairy Holly become unlikely partners and even unlikelier friends. The fairy world in Artemis fowl is really interesting as it is a mix of magic and futuristic technology. This technology plays a huge part in the series particularly with his later nemesis a fairy named Opal. This series is full of action and a healthy amount of humor as well. I have seen this series classified as both fantasy adventure and science fiction and it is a great mix of genres. There is also a graphic novel version of this series for tweens who prefer graphic novels.
